Make sure there is adequate lighting. Consider employing motion-activated lights that plug into electrical sockets and turn on when you walk by to light up stairwells and corridors. Maintain a clean walking path. Books, papers, clothing, and shoes should not be left on the floor or stairs. Make sure all carpets are securely fastened to the floor so they don’t slip. On tile and wooden floors, use no-slip strips, which are available at any hardware store. Throw rugs and small area rugs are not recommended. Install grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of your bathtub and shower. Place nonskid mats, strips, or carpet on any wet surfaces. Remember to leave a light on in the bathroom at night, or use an automatic night light. Put night lights and light switches near your bed. Keep a flashlight beside your bed in case the power goes out and you need to get up (NIA,2022).

Education that I can provide to Mr. Juarez on how he can make his home a safer and suitable home for him and his wife in order to prevent trips or falls that can lead to serious injuries is by telling him how things such as furniture, rugs, and cords can be risk factors in his home for falls. I can suggest removing all throw rugs around the house, to secure or tape down electrical cords, to consider installing grab bars in the shower and toilet area, and how the implementation of a night light in the hallways or room can reduce the risk of falls and disorientations at night (Falkner & Green, 2022). In 2020 36,000 deaths occurred due to falls in adults 65 years of age or older (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Any fall has the potential to cause an injury to an induvial but a fall within our older adult population can be very serious and deadly.
